The Director of Indirect Tax is responsible for the strategic planning, management, and optimization of the company's sales and use tax, gross receipts tax, property tax, and business license function. This role serves as a key advisor to the business, ensuring compliance with all applicable tax laws and regulations, minimizing tax exposure, and providing expert guidance on tax implications related to business operations, expansions, and new product offerings. The Director will also lead and develop the Indirect Tax Team.
Key Performance Indicators
Percentage of returns filed accurately and on time.
Reduction in audit adjustments/assessments compared to prior periods.
Documented tax savings generated through strategic tax planning initiatives.
Accuracy of tax risk assessments and reserve recommendations.
Employee satisfaction and retention rates within the Indirect Tax Team.
The number of audits closed with no material findings.
Timeliness and accuracy of tax advice provided to internal stakeholders.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Develop and implement strategic tax plans to minimize the company's non-income tax liabilities, including sales and use taxes, gross receipts taxes
Structure business operations, transactions, and expansions (including new jurisdictions and product offerings) to optimize tax outcomes.
Proactively identify and analyze potential tax implications of current and proposed business activities.
Collaborate with operations, finance, legal, and other corporate functions to comprehensively understand business operations.
Act as a trusted advisor to internal stakeholders on sales and use tax, gross receipts tax, property tax and business license matters, providing expert guidance and recommendations.
Communicate complex tax concepts clearly and effectively to non-tax professionals.
Work with operations to ensure accurate tax collection and remittance.
Provide assistance and guidance to the Mergers & Acquisitions Team, including completing non-income tax due diligence on potential targets and ensuring successful integration of acquisitions.
Assess and advise the business on contingent tax risks associated with current and planned operations.
Recommend appropriate financial reserves to mitigate potential tax liabilities.
Monitor and interpret changes in tax laws and regulations, and ensure company compliance.
Oversee the preparation and filing of all non-income tax returns.
Manage and represent the company during non-income tax audits.
Supervise and mentor the Indirect Tax Team, fostering a collaborative and high-performing environment.
Provide guidance, training, and support to team members on complex tax issues.
Assist employees with their career planning and development.
Set performance expectations and conduct regular performance evaluations.
Assign and manage projects effectively within the team.
Analyze and guide the tax implications of expansions into new jurisdictions.
Evaluate and advise on the tax implications of new product and service offerings.
Ensure proper tax registration and compliance for new business activities.
CANDIDATE SUMMARY
Required Experience
10+ years of progressive experience in sales and use taxes
8+ years of experience leading teams
Property tax and business license experience preferred
Formal Education, Qualifications or Training
Bachelors Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field required
Masters Degree preferred
CPA preferred
